Tarvin Rural District Council was established following the Local Government Act of 1894 which introduced democratically elected urban and rural district councils to supersede the urban and rural sanitary areas created under the Public Health Act of 1872. The first meeting of the new authority took place on Saturday 29 December 1894 at Crypt Chambers, Chester, and the first chairman was R.O. Orton, J.P., of Bank House, Tattenhall. The population of the district was 12,614 in 1901. In 1936 the area of the authority was changed considerably. The Cheshire Review Order of 1936 abolished the Malpas Rural District, and the majority of its constituent parishes, including Agden, Bickley, Bradley, Chidlow, Chorlton, Cuddington, Duckington, Edge, Hampton, Larkton, Macefen, Malpas, Newton by Malpas, Oldcastle, Overton, Stockton, Threapwood, Tushingham with Grindley, Wychough and Vigland, were transferred to Tarvin Rural District. At the same time several parishes were transferred from Tarvin Rural District to Chester Rural District, including Aldford, Barrow, Buerton, Churton Heath, Guilden Sutton, Huntington, Lea Newbold, Rowton and Saighton. Unlike Chester Rural District, parts of which underwent quite extensive residential development, especially after the Second World War, Tarvin Rural District remained predominantly a farming area. In 1951 the population was 14,606 and in 1971 it was 18,123. Following the Local Government Act of 1972 Tarvin Rural District was merged with Chester Rural District and Chester County Borough to form Chester District, one of the eight new districts of Cheshire, containing a population of more than 115,000. By letters patent, dated 15 May 1974, the new district of Chester was granted the status of a borough and by a further grant of letters patent on 28 May 1974, the borough was granted the status of a city. The final meeting of the Tarvin Rural District Council took place on 23 March 1974 and the new authority came into being on 1 April 1974. The records listed below cover the period 1894-1974. Those items marked with an asterisk were deposited by the Clerk to Tarvin Rural District Council on 31 March 1974. All other items were transferred from the Cheshire Record Office in April 1974 |
